Maile, owner of Ulu and Kalo, chose to use native Hawaiian ingredients in her baked goods- which were gluten-free, coincidentally. She also chose to make her baked goods vegan to pursue a more healthy and environmentally conscious product.

It couldn’t be more fitting for Nalu to team up with Aokai Swim because Nalu means “Wave” in Hawaiian while Ao means “Blue” in Japanese, and Kai means “Ocean” in Hawaiian. Further fitting, this bowl will only be available at our Haleiwa location on the North Shore of Oahu- where Tina and Sally Cohen, owners of Aokai Swim, were born and raised.

Starting in the midst of the pandemic, this company began with a hot pot and a farmer’s market. However, in a very short amount of time they grew to operate a manufacturing facility and have reached distribution in most grocery stores on all islands, and even received placement in California’s elite food establishment- Erewhon Market.

Nalu Health Bar & Café has opened a new location in Haleiwa, marking the third Oahu store for the health food brand.

Founded by four friends from South America who wanted a place to offer healthy post-surf bites, Nalu launched in Kailua in 2015 and later expanded to include a second store at South Shore Market in Kakaako.

Visitors to Oahu's beautiful North Shore now have a new place to grab a healthy bite to eat. NALU Health Bar & Cafe just launched their newest location in Haleiwa town. Island residents and visitors to Oahu are encouraged to visit the newly launched Haleiwa cafe to taste some of NALU's signature items, including their authentic açaí bowls.
